Tennessee football podcast: Team 121 can still make positive school history

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee football’s Team 121 can still make school history and carve out what would be an impressive place in school folklore.

No Vols team has won bowl games following four successive seasons, and the current Tennessee team tied the record with a third-straight bowl victory last season.

There was a time in recent Vols’ football history when a bowl game was a given, but that was before Coach Phillip Fulmer’s 2005 team went off the rails with a 5-6 campaign that included the first loss to Vanderbilt in 23 years.

The Vols had made16 straight postseason appearances from 1989 through 2004 before the 2005 team failed to hold the line.

Coach Butch Jones and his Vols’ Team 121 are currently 4-5 with three games remaining.

Tennessee needs to win two of its next three games to make a fourth-straight bowl appearance happen.

The Saturday night 7:30 p.m. kick at Missouri   next up, followed by home games with LSU and Vanderbilt.

The Vols current streak of three consecutive bowl wins hadn’t been accomplished since Peyton Manning was quarterback in bowl victories from 1994-1996.

Most believe Jones won’t be back as head coach after an injury-plagued 2017 campaign proved to be the rebuilding year analysts predicted last summer, but a bowl win streak would certainly make him a more attractive hire for another school.

SEC Country’s Mike Griffith and WNML’s Josh Ward discuss the challenge Tennessee has ahead if its to make school history after what has been a difficult season.
