KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee proved it is a solid team last week in the Battle 4 Atlantis with a legitimate shot at an NCAA Tournament trip in March.
The Vols went 2-1 in the preseason tournament with their only loss coming to now-No. 4-ranked Villanova.
Grant Williams and Kyle Alexander have stepped up and played well in the post so far this season. Williams came in as someone who fans thought could push for an All-SEC first-team honor. Alexander is a bit more of a surprise. The duo has locked down the paint and combined to average 27.0 points p, 17.6 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game.
Alexander’s defense has improved under coach Rick Barnes, which has helped the Vols get off to a fast start. The defense currently ranks 26th, according to the Kenpom rankings.
Guard Lamonte Turner is playing more off the ball, which seems to have improved his productivity. Turner scored 17 points in the 78-75 win against Purdue. He hit 4 3-pointers in the victory.
When Turner’s shot is on, the team can hit another level.
