Baker Mayfield has been the best quarterback in college football season, but he hasn’t faced anything like the TCU defense yet.
The quarterback for No. 5 Oklahoma boasts the best completion percentage in the FBS (71.7). This week, he’ll face No. 6 TCU, with a defense allowing the fourth-lowest completion percentage in the FBS (49.1). Compare that to the rest of the Big 12, with the other nine defenses giving up an average completion percentage of 62.1.
The Frogs also boast the No. 1 pass defense in the Big 12 at 214.4 yards per game. They’re No. 11 in the country in sacks (28) and No. 19 in tackles for loss (67). Both of those marks are the best in the Big 12 as well.
Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley acknowledged this week that TCU is probably the best defensive unit the Sooners will have faced this year.
“Oh, they’re up there. No question,” Riley said. “They’ll be as strong a defensive challenge as we’ve had all year. Easily. Gary [Patterson] always does such a great job with those guys.”
Mayfield presents his own unique challenge for the TCU defense, though. He is second in the nation in passing yards (3,226) and third in passing touchdowns (28), and has thrown just 5 interceptions this season. The Frogs will need to play their best game of the year to contain the Heisman frontrunner.
The Sooners host the Frogs at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday on FOX.
