TCU DE Ben Banogu named Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year

TCU junior defensive end Ben Banogu is the 2017 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year, the league announced on Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman transferred from Louisiana-Monroe following the 2015 season and sat out 2016 due to NCAA transfer rules. In his debut season with the Frogs, Banogu so far has 40 tackles and a team-high 14 tackles for a loss. Banogu has the second-most sacks on his team with 7.5 sacks and had 7 quarterback hurries.

Banogu was an All-Sun Belt Newcomer Team selection in 2015 after recording 45 tackles, 5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss his freshman season of college. The transfer has emerged as a key piece to TCU’s defense, which ranks as one of the best in the country.

Banogu and TCU will play for the Big 12 championship at 12:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, at AT&T Stadium. The TCU will get a rematch against No. 3-ranked Oklahoma, who beat the Frogs 38-20 on Nov. 11 in Norman, Oklahoma.
