Tennessee’s coaching search still isn’t over, but Steve Spurrier has a suggestion for who he thinks the Vols should bring in to finally end it.
During his appearance on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM on Thursday, the former Florida and South Carolina coach suggested that Tennesssee should hire Tee Martin, USC’s offensive coordinator and a Vols alum.
“Tennessee will get ’em a coach here, eventually. We don’t know when, but they’ll get one,” Spurrier said. “I think they ought to hire Tee Martin and that would unite the fan base again. ‘Hey, one of our own.’ I really believe there’s a reason Wisconsin is so good this year, and that’s because their head coach and both their coordinators went there, so they’ve got alumni coaching their school and the loyalty that they bring through the entire team, I think it pays dividends in the course of the season.”
Martin is in his second season as offensive coordinator at USC and his sixth on the Trojans’ staff. He has also served as an assistant at New Mexico and Kentucky.
“He knows what he’s doing, he’s very capable,” Spurrier said. “You would think he would bring back one or Tennessee assistant coaches.”
Martin has been a rumored name during the Vols’ coaching search, which has included rumored offers to Greg Schiano, Mike Gundy and Jeff Brohm. However, Tennessee hasn’t locked down its future coach yet.
