Florida found its man to lead the football program and hopefully make the Gators a national contender in Dan Mullen, who was hired on Sunday after nine seasons at Mississippi State.
One person who knows what it takes to win in Gainesville and the SEC is Florida legend Steve Spurrier, who led the Gators to prominence in the 1990s and 2000s. Spurrier, who currently works as an ambassador to the university, likes what he has seen in Mullen.
“We got a proven coach,” Spurrier said on ESPN Radio on Wednesday. “Dan did a very good job at Mississippi State. He was here with Urban [Meyer] and all he did was win a couple nationals and SEC championships. He has a good plan.”
Mullen took over a stagnant Mississippi State program in 2009 and slowly turned the Bulldogs around, culminating with a No. 1 rankings – the first ever in program history – and 10-win season in 2014.
The new head coach also spent six years working under Meyer, first at Utah and then as offensive coordinator at Florida, helping the Gators offense, led by quarterback Tim Tebow, become a force on the field.
While Florida fans had their hopes on the Gators landing Chip Kelly, Mullen could very well be a better hire in the long run. Knowing Spurrier is happy about it will make Gators fans excited about the future.
