Stanford announces starting QB for game vs. No. 9 Stanford

It’s early in the week and Stanford coach David Shaw has already named his starting quarterback for Friday’s heavyweight battle vs. No. 9 Washington.

The Cardinal will roll with C.J. Costello against the Huskies, Vytas Mazeika of The Bay Area News Group reported Monday.

Costello, a redshirt freshman, didn’t exactly shine against WSU in Pullman. He completed 9 of 20 passes for 105 yards. He didn’t throw a touchdown but had a rushing touchdown. He was intercepted in the fourth quarter. Costello has taken over for Keller Chryst under center.

“It’s hard to get thrown in a game like that, in the weather, against a team like that,” Shaw said, per Mazeika. “That’s tough duty, and tough duty again this week.”

Shaw added that running back Bryce Love is still not back to full strength but felt OK after the game in Pullman.

“Bryce Love came out of the game OK,” Shaw said, per Mazeika. “Still not 100 percent, but did well in the game. Had the great breakaway run. Will continue to rehab him this week and try to get him ready for Friday night.”

Stanford’s game against the Huskies is sure to have implications in the Pac-12 North title battle. Washington leads the way with a 5-1 conference mark. WSU and Stanford aren’t far behind with a 5-2 record in Pac-12 play. Washington State plays Utah this Saturday.

Friday’s game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT on Fox Sports 1.
