Sporting News: SEC has 6 of the the country’s top 25 quarterbacks

Another day, another preseason list with plenty of SEC representation.

Sporting News released its top 25 quarterbacks for the 2017 season on Thursday, and the SEC had six names on the list.

Georgia’s Jacob Eason (25), Arkansas’s Austin Allen (22), Ole Miss’ Shea Patterson (19), Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham (16), Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald (13) and Alabama’s Jalen Hurts (3) made the cut.

Here’s what author Bill Bender had to say about Hurts, the SEC’s top-rated passer.

“Keep in mind that Hurts was one drive away from leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship as a freshman. He should improve as a passer under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll while maintaining his role as a part of the rushing attack. Hurts’ poise is remarkable, and he’ll take the next step as a sophomore.”

Missouri’s Drew Lock and South Carolina’s Jake Bentley were both recognized as honorable mentions.

Topping the list is Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, followed by USC’s Sam Darnold. Rounding out the top five is Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett.
