South Carolina recruiting: Weekend recruiting updates; state title games set

South Carolina recruiting

Whenever Will Muschamp lands a commitment, the South Carolina coach drops a #SpursUp on Twitter. Come to SEC Country for the latest news, notes and observations in South Carolina recruiting. For previous editions of SpursUp Surveillance, check out the link.

Clemson game reaction

Generally speaking, there’s a misconception among some fans when it comes to recruits visiting for games such as South Carolina’s losses to Clemson and Kentucky.

The result of a game isn’t as big of a deal as the atmosphere surrounding it. Relationships, opportunity for playing time and overall comfort — those are the things that matter most to recruits. Again, generally speaking.

Look no further than the tweet from 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge, who was back in Williams-Brice Stadium for the Clemson game. The Concord (N.C.) High School senior attended at least three games in Columbia this season. He also went to the opener in Charlotte, N.C.

That tweet is an indication why there are so many 247Sports Crystal Ball picks — 22, to be exact — for Sandidge to South Carolina.

Iron Bowl visitors

Four-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) has been to several South Carolina games this season. On Saturday, he was in Auburn for the Iron Bowl. The younger brother of Gamecock “Buck” D.J. Wonnum spoke with SEC Country’s Ben Wolk after the game.

“They’re in it with just about everybody else,” the younger Wonnum said of Auburn. “There’s no leader.”

LSU, Florida and Tennessee also are in the mix for Wonnum, who was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Game.

Four-star linebacker Channing Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) and former LSU defensive back Saivion Smith (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College) were among the official visitors on The Plains this past weekend.

Weekend of champions

On Saturday, 3-star 2018 athlete Bryce Thompson will lead Dutch Fork against Dorman in the South Carolina 5A high school state championship. Dorman’s top wide receiver, 2019 4-star prospect Jacoby Pinckney, has an offer from South Carolina, but there isn’t much interest. That game kicks at noon.

The 4A title game, which starts at 6:30 p.m., features another rematch between South Pointe and Hartsville. The 3A final is another rematch from last season: Chapman and Dillon. That game begins at 3 p.m.

All three games will be played at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The 1A and 2A championship games are on Friday night at Benedict College. Abbeville and Bamberg-Ehrhardt (2A) play at 5 p.m and Lamar and Baptist Hill (1A) follow at 8 p.m.
