Georgia commitment in crosshairs
If there’s one school with a chance to convince Rashad Cheney Jr. to flip his commitment from Georgia, it’s South Carolina. That’s what the 4-star defensive tackle from Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Ga., has indicated in previous interviews with SEC Country.
Cheney, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound 2019 prospect, has been to South Carolina several times this year. He visited for the Arkansas game with two teammates: 2020 linebacker Isaiah Ratcliff and 5-star 2019 wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, who’s also committed to Georgia.
South Carolina’s coaches saw them again on Saturday for the Clemson game.
“It was great for me. Every time I go there, I get the same love and everything,” Cheney said. “The more and more I go up there, the better it gets. The atmosphere of the game, it was great. They played their in-state rival, so it was packed and loud. I really liked it.”
Muschamp, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon all spoke with Cheney.
- Muschamp: “I didn’t get to talk to him as much as I usually do. They were focusing on their game. He just told me he’s glad that I keep coming back. Every time he talks to me, he tells me he’s looking for people who can get after the quarterback and he tells me I’m one of them.”
- Thompson: “We talked about a lot. Not just about football, but about life. But he looks at my film and tells me what I need to work on and all that.”
- McClendon: “We get along a lot, because he’s from the same side of town that I’m from. He just talks to me. We just kick it.”
Meeting with T-Rob
South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson is expected to make a trip to Louisiana next week to meet with 3-star safety Israel Mukuamu, who’s committed to Florida State.
With the uncertain future of Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher, Mukuamu is considering his alternatives. The Gamecocks are chief among them.

“I’m still talking to South Carolina and I told them to just wait on it,” Mukuamu told Phil Kornblut, earlier this week. “If there’s a coaching change at Florida State, I’ll probably flip to Georgia or USC, most likely one of the two.”
Mukuamu, who attended Berkeley (S.C.) High School through December of his junior year, is now enrolled at Parkway High School in Bossier City, La.
According to the 247Sports composite, Mukuamu is the No. 44 safety in the Class of 2018.
