South Carolina recruiting: Gamecocks offer 2020 QB from Myrtle Beach

The South Carolina recruiting reach has dipped back into the Class of 2020. On Sunday, the Gamecocks offered quarterback Luke Doty.

Doty, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect from Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School, made his first varsity start on Friday, connecting on 15 of 31 passes for 199 yards with 173 more yards on the ground. He also accounted for 3 touchdowns in the 54-51 loss to Charlotte (N.C.) Christian.

North Carolina, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina offered before his sophomore season. Clemson, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech are also expressing interest.

On Sunday, Doty’s coach told him to call co-offfensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper. During the call, Roper put coach Will Muschamp on the line, and the Gamecocks offer was made.

The coaches invited Doty to visit Columbia next month for the home opener against Kentucky. He was on campus earlier this summer for a Muschamp Camp session.

South Carolina has offered two other quarterbacks from the Class of 2020: 4-star Max Johnson (Watkinsville, Ga.) and 4-star Drew Pyne (New Canaan, Conn.). The lone 2019 quarterback with an offer from the Gamecocks, Garrett Shrader, out-dueled Doty on Friday in Myrtle Beach.
