@PeteyBeatz62 asks … Best walk-on so far this season?
The answer is a no-brainer, assuming you remembered that tight end Hayden Hurst joined South Carolina as a walk-on wide receiver.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: One of Steve Spurrier’s best recruiting gets in Columbia just sort of landed in his lap. The list goes on, but Hurst was among the last few.
Will Muschamp should send the HBC a “thank you” text at least once a week, as long as Hurst is still around. Not only is he one of the team’s top playmakers ― perhaps the best, if Deebo Samuel isn’t playing ― but Hurst has helped set the foundation and culture that any coach hopes to have in his program.
Hurst is the hardest worker on the team. Over a year ago, he was one of the only members of the team who would lift extra, go the extra mile, etc. Now, it’s almost like, if you’re not doing more, you’re in the minority.
That alone will help write what’s going to be one helluva legacy at South Carolina.
In the meantime, the junior is among the 10 players vying for the Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the country’s best walk-on. This season, Hurst has caught 30 passes for 421 yards and 2 touchdowns.
As for the other Gamecocks walk-ons not named Hurst, there are a few others we’ve seen make plays in 2017.
- Redshirt sophomore running back Ty’Son Williams transferred from North Carolina as a walk-on, thanks to some help from the GI Bill. He leads South Carolina with 349 yards rushing.
- Redshirt freshman kicker Parker White has struggled making kicks from more than 40 yards (2 of 10), but he’s been solid from 39 yards and in (8 of 9). Also, he’s tied for ninth in the country in touchback percentage on kickoffs (73.33 percent).
- Sophomore defensive back Javon Charleston recovered a fumble on a South Carolina punt return against Louisiana Tech, which helped avoid an upset at home.
