South Carolina football: Jake Bentley treats the Gamecocks OL to dinner

Jake Bentley knows the way to an offensive lineman’s heart. On Wednesday night, the South Carolina football team’s quarterback treated his line to a meal.

Alan Knott and Cory Helms, the Gamecocks starting center and right guard, each shared a group picture after their meal at Rockaway Athletic Club, a popular burger spot on Rosewood Drive in Columbia.

From let to right in the picture: Knott, right tackle Zack Bailey, Bentley, Helms, left guard Donell Stanley and left tackle Malik Young.

Bentley, who started seven games for South Carolina as a freshman, will look for his line to return the favor on Sept. 2 in the season opener against North Carolina State. The Wolfpack defensive line is among the best in the country.

“We’ve got two weeks to get fine-tuned, to get ready and go out and play a really good defensive front, because they’re expected to be as good as the Carolina Panthers,” Gamecock offensive line coach Eric Wolford said, late last week.

Wolford certainly likes the leadership he’s seen from the two senior offensive linemen.

“Alan and Cory have been tremendous,” Wolford said. “They’re consistent. They work hard. They’re leaders of our group.  They’re the hardest working guys. They push through. They hold each other accountable and hold the rest of the guys in the group accountable. They step in. I bounce ideas off them.”
