South Carolina-Florida preview, keys to the game

Senior safety D.J. Smith doesn’t want to think too much about the next three weeks: Florida, Wofford and Clemson.

“I live in the moment, so I don’t really stress it that much,” he said. “This whole offseason, I knew it was my last year and I knew every day would go by fast and it would come up quick, so right now I’m just living in the moment.

“I’m not really thinking about it right now. I’m trying to enjoy it day by day, enjoying it as it ends.”

South Carolina has beaten Florida only once during Smith’s four-year career with the Gamecocks. That was in 2014, when he was a freshman, and Muschamp was still the Gators coach.

Saturday will be the second time Muschamp has faced his former team as South Carolina’s coach. Florida won last season’s showdown in The Swamp 20-7.

Even though the Gators have lost their last two games by a total of 64 points, Muschamp doesn’t want his current team to focus on those results. Instead, he points to earlier in the season, before Florida parted ways with coach Jim McElwain.

“I talked to our guys Monday,” Muschamp said. “‘Don’t be fooled by the tape the last two weeks. Let’s go back and watch Tennessee, let’s go back and watch LSU, let’s go back and watch A&M. Let’s go back and watch those game tapes.’

“They’ve had a lot of uncertainty off the field and certainly, having been through it, it is a distraction and will take its mental toll. But again, that’s why the consistent message from me all the time is about our preparation and how we prepare and how we go about our business and our preparation for the game is going to determine the outcome of the game and not about what the other team does.

“Certainly, we respect our opponents, their players, their schemes and things like that. But it’s about our preparation. That’s the most important thing and that’s why it’s always the consistent message. So you shouldn’t have a lot of variance in how you play.”
