South Carolina coach Will Muschamp: ‘We just got whipped in the second half’

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Will Muschamp didn’t waste any words: ‘We got whooped on the line of scrimmage.”

Georgia rolled over the Gamecocks 41-17 on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium, wearing down South Carolina in the second half despite losing starting left tackle Andrew Thomas to an ankle sprain at the start of the third quarter.

“At times our run game was effective on some scoring drives, but then we could not stop the run defensively as we allowed them to score 21 points on their first three drives of the second half.”

Muschamp said before the game he was concerned with the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs’ speed, and that proved accurate.

Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney expertly spread the field with runs and passes on the perimeter, wearing down South Carolina.

“They do a great job creating space, and we have been talking about it all week,” said Muchamp, a former Georgia football walk-on who is now 1-6 against his alma mater. “I do not think we got hurt on the perimeter in the first half at all, but in the second half it was a whole different story.”

The Bulldogs piled up 226 yards on 21 plays in the third quarter, after accumulating 183 yards on 31 plays in building a 20-10 halftime lead.

Georgia out-rushed South Carolina 271 yards to 54 yards after Fromm loosened up the defense with some passes.

“They’re very good on the line of scrimmage, they’re massive in their offensive line,” Muschamp said. “We’ve got to be able to play better up front, disengage up front, make better tackles in space.”

Muschamp said he was disappointed his defense allowed Jake Fromm and the Bulldogs to drive for a field goal at the end of the first half.

“Then we just got whipped in the second half,” Muschamp said. “We got moved off the line of scrimmage, we did not tackle as well, and we did not get lined up a couple times.”

South Carolina (1-1) plays Marshall next Saturday.
