Sound Off: Mississippi State offense, defense impressive in season opener

Mississippi State was expected to beat FCS opponent Charleston Southern to open the season, but the way the Bulldogs handled the Buccaneers with ease surpassed expectations. On this edition of Sound, presented by Zaxby’s, SEC Country’s Brandon Walker and Andrew Astleford break down MSU performance and point out what made the 49-0 win so impressive.

The discussion includes these highlights:

  • With junior quarterback Nick Fitzgerald calling the shots, the MSU offense moved the ball at ease and scored at will in the 49-0 win. Here’s what went right, and what needs improvement (:45).
  • A season removed from ranking among the worst defensive units in the SEC, Mississippi State’s defense dominated from the outset against Charleston Southern, registering a pair of sacks and limiting the Bucs to just 33 total yards on the day. It was MSU’s first shutout since 2014 and ranked among the best statistical showings in school history. So what made the MSU so good on Saturday? Brandon and Andrew break that down (2:00).
  • Looking ahead to the next game, MSU travels to take on Louisiana Tech this Saturday. For Brandon, that means MSU fans have to face the demons of 2008, when a season-opening loss to Tech ruined a potentially solid season. Now, nine years later, the Bulldogs return to Ruston, where they will look to move to 2-0 in advance of a Sept. 16 showdown against LSU. How will Louisiana Tech test the MSU defense? Will we see more of MSU’s offense this week? Brandon and Andrew predict what this game may look like (6:00).
  • While this game is important, a big showdown looms of the horizon for MSU, as LSU pays a visit next weekend. Before that happens, the guys take a look at the SEC landscape and try to determine where MSU falls in the SEC power rankings (9:00).
