Sound Off: How search is transpiring for coach, AD at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Bret Bielema era is over at Arkansas. So is the Jeff Long era. Now we’re on the hunt for the Hogs’ next two athletic department leaders.

And, boy, is it a mess as to whom it might be.

For the first few days after Bielema was let go following the season-ending loss to Missouri, there apparently were two separate groups looking for the team’s next coach. Unfortunately, the two groups weren’t on the same page.

With right hire, Arkansas poised to rise in SEC pecking order

Compounded by the fact that no permanent athletic director is in place, the Razorbacks are lucky that all the smoke from Tennessee’s tire fire is obscuring the mess in Fayetteville.

SEC Country reporters Eric W. Bolin and Trent Shadid talk about the crazy week that was and just what comes next for Hogs fans in this week’s Sound Off.

Here are some time stamps for specific topics:

  • Start – Hey, football is over. Let’s all go on vacation! … Yeah, right. Arkansas has lots to do before Christmas. What will happen first?
  • 2:00  – Interim athletic director   Julie Cromer Peoples owned the press conference after Bielema was fired. But what she said created all kinds of problems going forward, including some things that weren’t her fault.
  • 3:30  –  Every single thing that comes out about the coaching search seems to indicate that the Razorbacks want an Arkansas Man.  Every single thing.
  • 4:45  –  The catch is, other than Gus Malzahn, there isn’t a coach out there with Arkansas ties who would be an immediate fix. Arkansas is picking from the lower tier.
  • 8:00   – Bottom line: It seems as if Arkansas is digging itself a hole with everything that has transpired since Bielema was let go.
