SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic puts NC State in his surprising College Football Playoff picks

Ask your friends or colleagues who they think will be in the College Football Playoff, and you’ll get the same six or seven answers.

Just about everyone has Alabama in. Ditto for Ohio State. A lot of people like Florida State as well. For the fourth team, the most popular answers are some combination of either USC, Oklahoma State, Penn State or Washington.

But SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic went really out on a limb on his picks. He started with chalk, picking Alabama and Ohio State. He then picked Stanford to come out of the PAC-12, which is rather bold but not implausible. Where Cubelic really went out on a limb was in picking NC State, who went 7-6 in 2016.

Needless to say, many were shocked by this pick.

But the top response came from Mark Ennis, who came up with this gem.

NC State does have a very good defensive line, led by Bradley Chubb who might be both a 2018 first round draft pick and the best Chubb in football(sorry Nick). But in addition to opening up with South Carolina, NC State also has games at Florida State, as well as home contests against Clemson, Louisville and North Carolina.

NC State also wasn’t ranked in the first AP Poll. In the three year history of the College Football Playoff, no team that has begun the season ranked outside the top 20 in the first poll has made the playoff.
