Rutgers vs. Penn State 2017 preview: What you need to know
Rutgers has been hot as of late, while Penn State has lost its last two games
Rutgers is 3-1 in its last four games, all against Big Ten competition. Meanwhile, on the other end, Penn State has dropped its last two.
The Nittany Lions lost to Ohio State two weeks ago in a gut-wrenching 39-38 defeat and then followed it up with a 27-24 loss to Michigan State. It must be said that those two games came against what are currently the No. 12 and No. 13 teams in the country, while Rutgers’ three wins over its last four were against unranked opponents.
What happened last year in this game wasn’t pretty for Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights played the Nittany Lions in 2016 and the game went entirely Penn State’s way. The final score was 39-0, in favor of Penn State. The Scarlet Knights have done a good job running the football in its last few games and that will be the key if they want to pull off what would be an enormous upset.
According to mybookie.ag, Penn State is favored by 31 points
Despite the recent success for Rutgers and the two straight losses for Penn State, the Nittany Lions are still favored to win the game by 31 points. Vegas doesn’t appear to be fooled by the recent history of these two teams, which makes sense considering the end goal is to win money.
The contest between the Scarlet Knights and Nittany Lions is Penn State’s homecoming game
Not that homecoming games generally go one way or another, but any Nittany Lions fans who were thinking about skipping this game may now have a reason to go to as it is homecoming. Coaches in the past have talked about how homecoming can be a distraction for its players, but for Rutgers-Penn State, the majority still believes in the Nittany Lions to win big.
Breakdown of Rutgers’ individual statistics so far in 2017
The 2017 campaign is nine games in and only three regular season games remain for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have been led through the air by Kyle Bolin in terms of sheer numbers, but Giovanni Rescigno has thrown all but three of the team’s passing attempts in its last four games.
Those four games, again, have resulted in a 3-1 record for the Scarlet Knights. Rescigno has thrown 2 touchdowns to 1 interception so far this season, while Bolin has thrown 3 touchdowns to 6 interceptions.
Leading the way on the ground throughout the season has been Gus Edwards. Edwards is the team’s leader in rushing with 630 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Edwards, a senior, has run for 6 touchdowns.
In Rutgers’ last game — against Illinois, which resulted in an 11-point victory — Edwards ran for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns while catching 2 passes for 46 yards.
In the receiving department, the Scarlet Knights are led by Jerome Washington, who has accumulated 24 catches for 253 yards and 1 touchdowns this season. Washington is one of six players for the team who has caught 1 touchdown pass this season. No player has scored more than 1 receiving touchdown.
