Ronald Jones II entering elite company at USC

USC has one of the most storied histories in the backfield.

From O.J. Simpson and Marcus Allen to LenDale White and Reggie Bush, the Associated Press dubs the Trojans as the home of “Tailback U.”

Ronald Jones II is about to the program’s latest valedictorian. However, he’s more concerned with helping USC win one of its last two games, ensuring the Trojans a Pac-12 South title.

“I can’t even think of the words to describe it, but ultimately it doesn’t really matter unless we bring back that championship tradition,” Jones said. “That’s what we are trying to do this year.”

Should Jones run for 19 or more yards against Colorado on Saturday, he’ll pass Reggie Bush to rank ninth in USC history in career rushing yards.

So far in 2017, Jones has racked up 1,082 yards on the ground and 13 touchdowns on 159 carries — calming the waters of the prolific, albeit turnover-prone Sam Darnold.

“Everybody sees it,” USC running backs coach Deland McCullough said, per the AP. “And it wasn’t by osmosis. It wasn’t like he just decided to do it and it happened on its own. He wanted some guidance to do that and a definite plan for doing that, and we put one in place and he’s starting to see some of the benefits of it.”

According to the AP:

A strong finish to his junior season could see Jones move into third place among USC career rushers, vaulting ahead of Mike Garrett, Simpson, Ricky Bell and Anthony Davis and trailing only Allen and White.

Should Jones return for his senior year, he’ll have a chance to truly etch his name atop the Trojans’ history books.
