Reports: Arkansas to hire Derrick Gragg as new athletic director

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas will hire Derrick Gragg as its next director of athletics, according to multiple reports. He would replace Jeff Long, who was fired Nov. 15 after nearly a decade as the Razorbacks’ athletic director.

Trey Schaap of 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock was first to report Gragg would be hired.

Gragg, 48, has been the athletic director at Tulsa since 2013. He served as an associate and senior associate athletic director at Arkansas from 2000 to 2006. He’s also previously served as athletic director at Eastern Michigan University (2006-2013) and assistant athletic director at Michigan (1997-2000).

Arkansas is currently searching for a head football coach, a process in which Gragg is expected to become involved with immediately. The Razorbacks fired coach Bret Bielema on Nov. 24 after finishing the season 4-8 overall and 1-7 in SEC play. Bielema, who was hired by Long, spent five seasons in Fayetteville.

Julie Cromer Peoples served as interim athletic director after Long was fired. She informed Bielema of his firing, at which time she stated she would be leading the coaching search.

Gragg has overseen Tulsa’s transition to the American Athletic Conference during his time at the school. Within his first two years with the Golden Hurricane, he hired Frank Haith from Missouri as men’s basketball coach, former Women’s British Open champion Emilee Klein-Gille as women’s golf coach and Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery as football coach.

A native of Huntsville, Ala., Gragg graduated from Vanderbilt in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in human development. He was a four-year letterman at wide receiver for the Commodores. He later earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State in 1999. He also received a doctorate in higher education administration from Arkansas in 2004. Gragg also taught over a dozen college courses during his time at Arkansas.

Gragg and his wife, Sanya, have four children — daughters De’Sha and Saniyah, and sons Avery and Phillip-Raymond. Avery was a redshirt sophomore wide receiver at Tulsa this season.
