Report: Tennessee intrigued by Washington State’s Mike Leach, but concerned he sued old employer

Another day has passed, and Tennessee still hasn’t found its new coach. But another potential candidate has emerged.

On Wednesday morning, Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports and Sports Illustrated reported that Vols athletic director John Currie is “intrigued” with Washington State coach Mike Leach. However, Currie is also concerned with the fact that Leach sued his old employer, Texas Tech.

Leach sued Texas Tech because he said the school cheated him and owes him money for guaranteed income for his television and radio shows and other marketing deals. The case still hasn’t gone away because Leach has yet to receive the money he says he is owed.

Leach has coached Washington State since 2012, compiling a 38-37 record. The Cougars are 9-3 this season. Prior to that, Leach coached Texas Tech from 2000-09, going 84-43 in that span. He has also served as an assistant at Kentucky and Oklahoma.

Tennessee is in need of a coach after firing Butch Jones earlier this month. Public backlash prevented the Vols from hiring Greg Schiano, then Mike Gundy turned down the job on Tuesday.
