Another coach that Tennessee is targeting for its coaching vacancy may soon be off the table.

According to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports and Sports Illustrated, N.C. State has extended a new contract offer to coach Dave Doeren with increased compensation and years and an enhanced salary pool for his staff.

The Vols are currently reportedly targeting Doeren in their whirlwind search for a new coach.

Tennessee nearly hired Greg Schiano on Sunday, but public backlash prevented the deal from going through. It has since targeted Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm, but both have reportedly rejected offers.

According to Joe Giglio of The News & Observer, Doeren also has a potential deal with Tennessee, in addition to his improved offer from N.C. State. He is expected to make a decision on Thursday, per Giglio.

Doeren has been N.C. State’s head coach since 2013. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Northern Illinois from 2011-12 and also served as an assistant at Kansas and Wisconsin, among other schools.

Doeren is 33-30 over his five seasons leading the Wolfpack.
