Report: Penn State OC Joe Moorhead emerges as strong candidate for Mississippi State job

Mississippi State’s coaching search took a turn late Monday night when USA Today’s Dan Wolken reported that Penn State OC Joe Moorhead is in the mix.

Moorhead is the third P5 coordinator to be linked to the job, joining Clemson’s Brent Venables and Alabama’s Jeremy Pruitt. However, Moorhead is the only one of group that’s an offensive coach.

Mississippi State appears to be targeting young(ish) coordinators (Venables, Pruitt and Moorhead are all well under 50 years old) from big-time programs. That’s a strategy that has worked for many programs over the years, and it worked in Starkville when Mississippi State hired Mullen away from Florida nine years ago.

This will be a story to watch in the coming days.
