Report: Mississippi State to hire Penn State’s Joe Moorhead

Mississippi State has its new head coach.

Per Brett McMurphy, the Bulldogs will hire Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as its next head coach to replace Dan Mullen, who accepted the Florida position on Sunday.

While the deal is not complete, it is expected to be done within a couple of days.

Moorhead has been in charge of an offensive revival the last two seasons in State College, helping lead the Nittany Lions to No. 28 in overall offense in 2017, averaging 453.3 yards per game.

In the last 24 hours, Moorhead had emerged as one of the top candidates for the position along with Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Moorhead got his start in the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh. He then held several positions on the offense at Georgetown, Akron and then Connecticut. His first head coaching position was at Fordham from 2012-15. He was then hired by James Franklin at Penn State to be the offensive coordinator.

Moorhead will try to continue the success at Mississippi State that Mullen built during the last nine seasons. During his tenure, the Bulldogs went 69-46 and were ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history during the 2014 season.
