Report: Mississippi State has contacted Buccaneers assistant Todd Monken for job opening

Mississippi State has an opening at head coach, and it appears the Bulldogs won’t waste much time trying to find a replacement for Dan Mullen.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Mississippi State has contacted Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant Todd Monken for its vacancy. Monken previously served as head coach at Southern Miss from 2013-15.

During his time at Southern Miss, Monken went 13-26. However, he led the Golden Eagles to a 9-5 record in his final season in 2015, which included going 7-1 in Conference USA play. It was his only career head-coaching experience.

Monken has served as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Buccaneers the past two seasons. Prior to his time at Southern Miss, he served as an assistant with LSU, Oklahoma State and the Jacksonville Jaguars, among other teams.

Mississippi State’s opening was created on Sunday when Mullen left to become the head coach at Florida. The Bulldogs are 8-4 this season, but they lost their regular-season finale to Ole Miss on Thanksgiving.
