Mike Gundy could be the next Tennessee coach, but not quite yet.
According to national college football reporter Brett McMurphy, Gundy won’t make a decision regarding the Vols’ opening on Tuesday. The Oklahoma State coach reportedly met with Tennessee officials in Dallas, and prior to that, he received a call from former Vols quarterback Peyton Manning.
Gundy had notified Oklahoma State officials of his intention to meet with Tennessee officials, per McMurphy. Although his interest level in the job is unknown, as McMurphy had conflicting sources saying whether or not Gundy would actually leave the Cowboys — his alma mater — for the Vols.
Tennessee’s job is open after it fired Butch Jones earlier this month. The Vols nearly hired Greg Schiano on Sunday, but public backlash prevented that deal from going through.
There are other rumored candidates for the Tennessee job, but at this time, it appears that Gundy would be the leading choice for the Vols.
