A Florida source reportedly said Jim McElwain “was never the right fit” with the Gators.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Edward Aschoff and Mark Schlabach published a piece that detailed McElwain’s final days with the program. Within it, a Florida source was critical of McElwain’s ability to fit in.
Here’s more from the story:
“It was never the right fit,” a Florida source said of McElwain’s head coaching tenure in Gainesville. “It was an odd fit from the beginning. He never embraced being here and being part of a team.”
McElwain parted ways with Florida on Oct. 29. He finished with a 22-12 record in two-plus seasons with the Gators, and he led Florida to two SEC East titles.
That’s a strong statement from the source. But it’s not too surprising, given how McElwain’s tenure ended at the school. As part of the same report from Aschoff and Schlabach, it was revealed that McElwain, McElwain’s wife and at least one unnamed Florida player dealt with threatening messages.
Florida is 3-5 after a loss to Missouri last Saturday at Faurot Field. On Saturday, the Gators play at South Carolina.
