Report: Former Mizzou DE Kony Ealy claimed by Jets, joins cousin Sheldon Richardson in New York

Former Mizzou defensive end Kony Ealy didn’t last long with the Patriots. Then again, he didn’t last long on the waiver wire either.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Ealy had been claimed by the New York Jets.

The Patriots sent a second-round draft pick to the Panthers for Ealy along with a third-round pick back in March, but now he won’t have to travel far to join his new team and his cousin Sheldon Richardon. Ealy totaled 76 combined tackles and 14 sacks in three seasons with the Panthers. Richardson has 18 sacks and 142 total tackles in four seasons with the Jets.

Richardson and Ealy occasionally shared the field in Columbia in 2011 and 2012 before Richardson matriculated to the NFL. Yet, it wasn’t until Richardson was about to be drafted in 2013 that the two players found out they were related.

Ealy will add depth to a Jets defense that ranked 17th against the pass and 11th against the run last season. The team as a whole will need to cut down on points allowed, where they ranked among the bottom five in the league in 2016.
