Report: Former Arkansas OC Garrick McGee to join Derek Dooley’s offensive staff at Missouri

What do you do when you hire a coach who has never served as an offensive coordinator to be your play caller? It appears as though Missouri coach Barry Odom believes that answer is support him with someone who has done that job before.

New Tigers offensive coordinator Derek Dooley will have former Arkansas offensive coordinator and UAB head coach Garrick McGee at his disposal this fall, according to a report from Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

McGee, who was fired from his role as Illinois offensive coordinator by Lovie Smith in December, will reportedly be an offensive analyst for Missouri in 2018. This is an off-the-field role that does not count towards the 10 assistant coaches that can be on the field for Odom.

SEC fans likely know McGee best for his time as Bobby Petrino’s offensive coordinator with Arkansas. He was on the Razorbacks staff from 2008-11. Arkansas peaked at ninth in the nation in total offense under McGee during the 2010 season, piling up 482.5 yards per game.

McGee followed his time in Fayetteville with a two-year stint as the head coach at UAB, where he tallied a 5-19 record before his dismissal. McGee reunited with Petrino as the Louisville offensive coordinator in 2014 before leaving for Illinois in 2016.

Dooley, a former Tennessee head coach who was hired by Odom to run the Tigers offense after five years as the Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach, is serving in his first stint as an offensive coordinator after years of work coaching on the offensive side of the ball. Adding an experienced offensive playcaller like McGee to his meeting room and film room is probably a smart idea.

The Tigers finished up their spring practice with the program’s spring game on Saturday, and will head into the fall with one of the nation’s top returning quarterbacks in senior Drew Lock.
