According to a report by Dan Wolken of Yahoo Sports, Florida State officials have begun doing work on Oregon coach Willie Taggart and will target him if current coach Jimbo Fisher leaves for Texas A&M.
A person with knowledge of the matter told USA TODAY Sports that Florida State administrators have started preliminary background checks into candidates, including Oregon coach Willie Taggart. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Taggart is expected to be one of the top targets for Florida State’s search should the job open, as he has significant ties to the state and recruited extremely well in the Interstate-4 corridor during his four seasons at South Florida.
Taggart is 7-5 in his first year as the Oregon head coach and has built one of the best recruiting classes in school history. The Ducks currently have the No. 6 class in the country, per 247 Sports. Before getting the job at Oregon, Taggart has previously served as head coach at South Florida and Western Kentucky.

The Oregon coach is from the state of Florida, so it is natural that his name would come up in conversation as Florida State officials begin the process of even thinking about replacing Fisher. Fisher won a national championship at Florida State in 2013.
Taggart’s name has come up in conversation regarding the openings at Florida, Tennessee and Texas A&M so far, though Taggart has not interviewed for any of those positions and has not commented on those rumors. However, Florida State is a big name in his own state and seems to be interested in him. If Fisher leaves, Taggart may have to decide whether he wants to return to the southeast or if he wants to continue building in Eugene.
