With Dan Mullen leaving Mississippi State for Florida, that creates an opening in Starkville. No official decision appears imminent, but a list of interested candidates, including Clemson DC Brent Venables, is starting to emerge.

Footballscoop.com is reporting Venables has been asked to interview for the opening at Mississippi State. Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is also a candidate.

Venables has been the architect of the strongest run of defense in Clemson’s history. He’s been with the Tigers since 2012 and has led them to two straight National Championship Game appearances, including a win in 2016.

Prior to working for Clemson, he was Bob Stoops’ DC at Oklahoma from 2004-11. He experienced mixed results in Norman before leaving to make way for Mike Stoops’ second stint with the Sooners.

Venables has also been mentioned as a candidate for the opening at Arkansas.

Clemson is preparing to face Miami in the ACC Championship game on Dec. 2.
