Purdue football and Northwestern play Saturday, November 11, 2017 in a Big Ten West game. Find TV channel, online live stream, kick time and picks here.

Purdue is looking to stop the downward trend it’s been on in the second half of the season. The Boilermakers enter this game off a 29-10 win over Illinois, which was encouraging because it was a 19-point win but also not that encouraging because it was over Illinois. Northwestern, a team that snuck into the latest College Football Playoff rankings, is on a four-game winning streak after a slow start to the season.

Purdue vs. Northwestern 2017 preview: What you need to know

Purdue’s gone with a 2-quarterback look in most games this season. Now it won’t be able to.

Purdue’s often alternated junior David Blough and  sophomore Elijah Sindelar at quarterback, with Blough getting slightly more looks on the season. But Blough’s now out for the season with a dislocated ankle suffered in last week’s win, so Sindelar is the guy for Purdue.

“I would’ve liked to have won the job in a different manner, not with David getting hurt. It breaks my heart,” Sindelar said this week. “I still have to be able to do my job and lead this team.”

He doesn’t lack experience. Sindelar has started four games for Purdue this season, including the season-opener against Louisville.

“I’m not nervous. I’m not worried. I’ve been in the position before. Now, let’s just go play football. I’m excited for the opportunity,” Sindelar said.

Sindelar only through two passes in relief of Blough, completing both for a combined 32 yards. His best game came against Minnesota, when he went 19-for-2 for 248 yards and one touchdown.

Northwestern underwhelmed to start the season. The Wildcats have looked better lately, and the Playoff committee took notice.

Northwestern hasn’t lost to anyone it hasn’t supposed to, and has one win that keeps looking better and better. But near the start of the season, a Playoff ranking for the Wildcats seemed to be a long shot. Northwestern did not impress in a season-opening win over Nevada, a team that has been downright horrible in 2017.

Then came a thrashing at the hands of a Duke team that didn’t seem particularly good then and is now on a five-game losing streak. A beatdown of a bad Bowling Green came after that, then losses to Big Ten elites Wisconsin and Penn State. Northwestern’s wins since then keep looking better and better. The Wildcats beat Iowa 17-10, and the Hawkeyes are garnering real attention after their upset win over Ohio State. Two weeks ago, Northwestern beat a Michigan State team that’s knocking on the door to the top 10 in the Playoff rankings, a win that’s looking excellent right now.

One matchup to watch: Purdue’s running game and RB Markell Jones vs. Northwestern’s run defense and LB Paddy Fisher.

Simplifying a matchup like this down to two players is certainly an exercise in futility, but Jones and Fisher are the names you’ll likely hear the most on Saturday. Jones got hurt on Purdue’s kickoff in Week 1 against Louisville, so he didn’t get his first carry of the season until Week 6 against Minnesota. With his replacement Tario Fuller now out with an injury of his own, Jones is back at the right time. He hasn’t been in top form yet this season, only getting 36 yards on 7 carries. D.J. Knox actually led Purdue in rushing in that game with 85 yards on 14 carries, but Jones could be in for a bounce-back this week. Fisher, a freshman, will lead Northwestern’s effort to stop him. At 69 tackles, Fisher has a dominant lead in that stat on Northwestern’s defense, and for good reason. He’s led a Wildcats front that’s been excellent in 2017. Nebraska’s been the only team in the last five games to cross the century mark on the ground against Pat Fitzgerald’s defense, and it won’t be easy for Purdue to equal that.
