Purdue quarterback David Blough and Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith are among the 20 semifinalists up for the inaugural Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, according to a release Tuesday.

According to the Dallas Cowboys’ website, the award “will recognize the College Football Bowl Subdivision player who has demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field. It will honor the type of exemplary character and commitment to community, family and teammates demonstrated by Jason Witten, the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end for the Dallas Cowboys and the 2012 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year.”

Blough, who started for the Boilermakers before suffering a season-ending injury, has also made an impact beyond the gridiron. The Purdue football twitter account shared a few of those contributions Tuesday.

Smith, meanwhile, worked his way from third-string linebacker to one of the Nittany Lions’ defenders. Last season, he led the team with 2 interceptions and was sixth with 54 tackles. He’s currently ninth on the team with 27 tackles this season.

In addition, Smith made the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the “Academic Heisman.”
