Pro Football Focus: Baker Mayfield best in FBS when clean from pressure

Basic stats, advanced stats, take your pick: Baker Mayfield is the best quarterback in the country.

The Sooners’ gunslinger is the nation’s leader in not only passing efficiency, but also quarterback rating when he’s kept clean from pressure. Mayfield’s 148.6 quarterback rating with a clean pocket leads the FBS, according to Pro Football Focus.

When Oklahoma’s offensive line keeps the pressure away from Mayfield, he has a 76.9 completion percentage and 29-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Mayfield has shown a knack for creating something positive when plays break down, but these stats show how effective he is when everything goes right.

Mayfield and the Sooners are taking on TCU on Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Game. He threw for 333 yards with 3 touchdowns in Oklahoma’s 38-20 victory against the Horned Frogs on Nov. 11. He also made an impact on the ground, gaining 50 yards on 11 carries.

If TCU can’t stop or even limit Mayfield, Saturday’s game could come easily to the Sooners. A victory would give them three straight Big 12 titles, all of which have come with Mayfield as the quarterback. It would also guarantee them a spot in the College Football Playoff.

If the Horned Frogs want a shot at winning, they need to pressure Mayfield. But as he has demonstrated multiple times, that might not even be enough.
