Michigan State enters the 2017 college football season unranked and picked up 1 vote in the preseason Associated Press rankings, released Monday.
The Spartans finished the 2016 season 3-9 and now enter 2017 outside the Top 25, just the second time in seven years they have been unranked in the preseason poll.
What it means: It’s a surprise that Michigan State is even in this spot. After last year’s disastrous campaign followed by the loss of a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, it would be quite a surprise to see the Spartans eventually break back into the rankings.
What’s next: Michigan State opens its season on Saturday, Sept. 2, against Bowling Green. The game will be broadcast at noon ET on ESPNU.
