Pine Finebaum: Tennessee’s Butch Jones ‘cannot afford to lose Monday night’

It seems like every year, the Tennessee Volunteers come into the season with considerable hype, only to not quite live up to expectations. And although the Vols don’t have quite as high of expectations this season, there is always pressure on Butch Jones to win in Knoxville — 2017 is no exception. ESPN’s Paul Finebaum certainly recognizes that which is why he said on SportsCenter Sunday morning that Jones ‘cannot afford to lose Monday night’ when Tennessee takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The implication there, of course, is that a loss would immediately put Jones on the hot seat and would have to spend much of the rest of the season fighting for his job. A loss to the Yellow Jackets would make Tennessee’s Week 3 game against Florida a near must-win for Jones and his staff.

Ranked 25th in the country to open the season, Jones’ Volunteers are slight favorites (the line is -3), but the Yellow Jackets may well have the home field advantage with the game being in Atlanta, despite how well Tennessee fans tend to travel.
