Predicting South Carolina vs. Florida

SEC Country’s Hale McGranahan and Mike Chapman both like the South Carolina Gamecocks’ chances to knock off the Florida Gators in Columbia on Saturday.

McGranahan picks the Gamecocks, 28-14, while Chapman has South Carolina winning by three touchdowns, 34-14, thanks in large part to its defense.

“The Gamecocks defense should have the advantage against an offense that’s missing a lot of players at key positions and has struggled to score points the last two weeks,” Chapman said. “The most important thing to watch is who ends the day with more tackles. Skai Moore and T.J. Brunson continue to battle for the team lead.”

The Gamecocks have lost two straight to the Gators, with their last win coming in 2014, a 23-20 victory in overtime with now-South Carolina coach Will Muschamp on the Florida sideline.

Good to go

South Carolina defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth has been cleared to play against Florida on Saturday, Muschamp told reporters on Thursday.

The senior was dinged up against Georgia last weekend. He has 27 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in nine games this season.

Start ’em early

According to Muschamp, the Gamecocks are expecting a dozen mid-year players to arrive on campus in January.

The list of commits expected to enroll early includes 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner, 3-star defensive back R.J. Roderick, 3-star center Hank Manos, 3-star running back Deshaun Fenwick and more.

The second-year South Carolina coach told reporters that will be the most early enrollees he’s “ever been around.”

Timetable set

Four-star linebacker and major South Carolina target Channing Tindall will announce his commitment by the end of the year.

“The three main colleges I’m looking at are South Carolina, Georgia and Florida,” Tindall said. “I can tell you that I’m going to make my decision by the end of the year, but nothing more than that.”

The Columbia native is rated as the No. 121 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite.

The guest list

The Gamecocks are expecting a number of highly sought-after prospects at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, including:

  • 5-star 2018 defensive end K.J. Henry (official)
  • 4-star JUCO DB Saivion Smith (official)
  • 3-star 2018 defensive end Jarrett Jackson (official)
  • 2020 defensive end Jacolbe Cowan

Henry is rated as the No. 16 overall prospect for 2018, per the 247Sports composite. He’s set to announce his commitment on Dec. 20, reportedly deciding between Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

The encore

What will the South Carolina men’s basketball team do to follow up its first-ever Final Four appearance last season?

The Gamecocks open the 2016-17 campaign Friday night at Wofford as the Terriers open their brand-new home, the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Feel-good flashback

The 2014 season saw the Gamecocks come down to earth after three straight 11-win seasons, but the 7-6 campaign wasn’t without its highlights.

One of the highest points of 2014 was QB Dylan Thompson’s 4-yard touchdown run in overtime against Florida to lead South Carolina to a 23-17 win in The Swamp.
