PFF: Baker Mayfield is the nation’s very best on ‘quick passes’

With Baker Mayfield running the show, Oklahoma’s offense has been among the nation’s most explosive all season long.

The Sooners concluded the regular season ranked Nos. 1 and 4 in total offense and scoring offense with 593.5 yards per game and 45.3 points per game, respectively. Don’t let the video game-request numbers fool you, though — Oklahoma’s offense is much more than a home run threat each time out, although it’s certainly that, as well.

For example, when it comes to getting that ball out of his hands and into those of his playmakers in a mere matter of seconds, Mayfield is quite literally the best in the country. As noted by Pro Football Focus, Mayfield boasts a 131.8 passer rating on quick passes after completing 138 of 176 such attempts for 18 touchdowns, which considers passes thrown within 2.5 seconds of the snap.

The aforementioned passing proficiency is resemblant of Mayfield’s overall body of work.

Along with leading the nation with his 131.8 rating on quick passes, Mayfield’s 4,097 passing yard and 37 touchdown passes each rank No. 2 in the nation, and his overall 203.3 passer efficiency rating is far-and-away the best in the country.

Not surprisingly, such efforts have paved to way for Mayfield to headline the Heisman race for much of the season.

After thriving throughout the regular season, Mayfield’s tallest tests remain.

On Saturday, Oklahoma will take the field against TCU once again, but this time around, the Big 12 Championship is at stake. With a win assuredly placing the Sooners into the College Football Playoff, Mayfield’s quick-striking prowess should be on full display once again.
