The news that Tennessee was closing in on a deal to make Greg Schiano the next head coach at Tennessee caused an uproar with some in Knoxville taking to the streets. The most recognizable name in Vols football saw things differently.
On Sunday, the hiring of Schiano seemed imminent before Tennessee fans stood opposed to it literally by protesting, and virtually with an overwhelming response online.
However, Kirk Herbstreit reveals that Tennessee legend Peyton Manning was on board with the decision. You can listen to Herbstreit here, who describes his continuous conversations with Manning during the whole process.

“I talked to Peyton quite a bit before they made the hire,” Herbstreit said. “He was just kind of throwing names off of me, which a lot of people tend to do, and I was excited and he was excited.
“We basically, talking over the phone, kind of high-fiver and said, ‘Hey, congratulations. You got a great coach. And he said, ‘Yeah, I talked to Urban Meyer. I talked to Bill Belichick. We’re really excited about this. We vetted him. Everything’s clean. It’s good. I said, ‘Awesome, man. Congrats. He’s going to do a great job and put a good staff together.’
And that was it. That was before everything went down, and then everything went down. I was in the air and was texting him, ‘What in the world is happening here?'”
