The Rutgers wrestling program welcomed a major addition Wednesday, as 125-pound standout Nick Suriano officially enrolled at the university, according to a release. The four-time New Jersey state champion wrestled at Penn State last season before deciding to transfer to his
home-state school.

“New Jersey is my home and it’s what I want to represent,” Suriano said in the release. “I want to make history and bring New Jersey and Rutgers with me. I have all the support and coaching I need right here at this university. This was my decision, and I’m confident in it and the support of the team I have around me.”

The announcement comes three days after the Big Ten granted Suriano an immediate eligibility waiver so he could wrestle at Rutgers right away. Without the waiver, the Paramus, New Jersey, native would have had to sit out a year if chose to transfer to any in-conference program.

Suriano will join Scarlet Knights when they begin preseason practice Monday, according to

“We are excited that Nick has decided to come back home and join our program,” head coach Scott Goodale in the release. “This is a young man with an incredible work ethic and drive that doesn’t come around all that often. We are beyond excited that Nick is eligible to compete right away. This is a student-athlete that deserves the opportunity to chase his dream of becoming a national champion in his home state.”

With three years of eligibility remaining, Suriano should provide Rutgers with a national title contender for the next few seasons. As a freshman with the Nittany Lions, Suriano (17-1) was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country. If not for an ankle injury, which sidelined him Big Ten and NCAA Championships, Suriano would have likely been a championship favorite in his weight class.

Suriano will make his Scarlet Knights debut against Maryland at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 4. Rutgers will host Penn State on Jan. 28, 2018.
