Penn State RB Saquon Barkley is one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy entering the 2017 season, and those expectations won’t be going anywhere after his performance Saturday against Akron.
Barkley rushed for 174 yards on 14 carries in Penn State’s 52-0 thrashing of the Zips to open the season, and had one 80-yard dash that set up a Trace McSorely score. This was enough for Barkley to take the No. 1 spot in Sports Illustrated’s list of top 5 Heisman candidates after Week 1:
Bruce Feldman writes:
1. Saquon Barkley, Penn State, RB: The junior was his usually spectacular self, torching Akron for 172 yards on just 14 carries with two going for touchdowns. He also had 54 receiving yards on three catches in a 52–0 romp. He’ll face a Pitt team that held him under 100 rushing yards and beat the Nittany Lions last season.
Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph, Louisville QB Lamar Jackson and LSU RB Derrius Guice fall in after Barkley on the list.
Penn State will move on to play Pitt in Week 2. Barkley had 85 yards and 4 touchdowns on 20 carries in the Nittany Lions’ loss to the Panthers last season.
