Penn State’s Saquon Barkley No. 2 in NFL execs’ mock draft, per Sports Illustrated

Saquon Barkley’s 2017 Heisman campaign might not be a slam dunk anymore, but NFL executives reportedly are still high on the Penn State running back.

Barkley is No. 2 in Albert Breer’s 2017 NFL mock draft in Sports Illustrated, which was vetted by various executives around the league. Here’s Breer’s note, which is short and sweet:

“Barkley’s had a rough go the last couple weeks, but he’s still  the best pure prospect in the class. The question will be how the teams drafting high value running backs.”

The mock draft had USC QB Sam Darnold at No. 1, UCLA QB Josh Rosen at No. 3, NC State DE Bradley Chubb at No. 4 and Alabama CB Minkah Fitzpatrick at No. 5.

Barkley’s draft speculation was a hot topic in the preseason, with him topping NFL.com’s list of top college running backs in August.

More recently, ESPN’s Mel Kiper listed Barkley as his No. 1 overall player two weeks ago.
