Penn State-Rutgers preview, keys to the game
Penn State has dominated the series all-time against Rutgers at 25-2. Rutgers’ two wins came in 1918 and 1988. But other than those two years, the Nittany Lions have dominated.
Penn State is also 3-0 against the Scarlet Knights since Rutgers joined the Big Ten. In 2014, Penn State won 13-10. It then won 28-3 in 2015. Last year, Penn State won big, 39-0.
The Nittany Lions are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten going into the game. They average 38 points per game and give up 14.8 points per game. RB Saquon Barkley remains a Heisman contender even with Penn State losing two in a row. Barkley has 864 rush yards with 9 touchdowns. He also has 504 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns, 393 kick return yards with 2 scores and a passing touchdown.
QB Trace McSorley is 190-for-296 passing for 2,452 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. On the ground, McSorley has 305 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. McSorley’s top receiver is DaeSean Hamilton with 36 catches for 606 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Rutgers is 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten going into Saturday. That’s already a noticeable improvement from Chris Ash’s first season, when the Scarlet Knights finished 2-10 and didn’t win a Big Ten game.
This season, Rutgers averages 22.6 points per game while allowing 24.9 points per game.
Gus Edwards leads the team in rushing with 140 carries for 630 yards and 6 touchdowns. Robert Martin adds 358 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.
Giovanni Rescigno has taken over as the team’s starting quarterback. He is 32-for-63 passing for 407 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. But Rutgers will likely rely on the rushing attack.
In last week’s 31-24 win against Maryland, Rutgers threw the ball 18 times but ran the ball 46 times. The Scarlet Knights picked up 239 rushing yards and touchdowns, with Edwards leading the way with 109 yards.
Penn State coach James Franklin hopes the Lions are ready to stop the losing at two games in a row. Earlier this week, Franklin told Steve Jones on the Penn State Coaches Show that his team probably didn’t regroup from losing to Ohio State quickly enough in time for the Michigan State game.
“I don’t think we got over the Ohio State loss quick enough,” Franklin told Steve Jones on the Penn State Coaches Show on Thursday night. “I don’t think our guys responded as well, and that’s on us. This week, the energy is back the way I expect it to be.”
