Penn State College Football Playoff rankings projection: Time to root for chaos

The College Football Playoff selection committee will release its second rankings of the season Tuesday night, and Penn State’s going to be lower than it was last week.

The Nittany Lions were No. 7 in the first CFP rankings. Then they lost to Michigan State 27-24, throwing their playoff hopes in the gutter. Expect them to fall down around Nos. 16 through 20 in the new rankings.

So, does Penn State still have a path to the College Football Playoff?

Well, technically. But so many things would have to go wrong in the rest of the college football universe. That’s a bit of a slide from where the Nittany Lions were last week, when they just needed some things to go wrong. One of those things did when Ohio State lost by 31 points to Iowa, but Penn State wasted its chance to stay in the Big Ten East race with that loss to Michigan State.

Now, the Nittany Lions would need Ohio State and Michigan State to both lose again before a shot at making the playoff becomes possible, and they would also need other conferences to crater. That would mean at least some of the following: Washington and USC both lose in the Pac-12, at least one of Alabama or Georgia lose before the SEC Championship and the Big 12 Championship turning out as disastrous as it could. That would set college football on fire, and would be the chaos needed to get Penn State back into the playoff.

With 2 losses in row, Rutgers just the opponent Nittany Lions need

This Saturday, Penn State hosts Rutgers. That’s a wonderful sign for a team coming in with a two-game losing streak, even if Rutgers has improved this season. The Scarlet Knights are 4-5, which is certainly an upgrade from the 2-10 team from last year., They also still haven’t played any good team closely. Rutgers lost 56-0 to Ohio State in Week 5, then 35-14 to Michigan in Week 9. Accordingly, Penn State opened up as a 28-point favorite.

Whatever Penn State’s path, it starts with a win on Saturday.
