MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is set to open the season as the Badgers’ No. 2 signal caller behind starter Alex Hornibrook.
Badgers coach Paul Chryst confirmed that Coan would be the backup Thursday night when he joined the ESPN Madison radio show “In the Trenches.” Chryst also said “five or six” freshmen likely would contribute this season.
Coan, a true freshman from Sayville, N.Y., beat out redshirt freshman Kare Lyles for the backup spot. True freshman Danny Vanden Boom will be the No. 4 quarterback.
Coan arrived as an early enrollee in time for spring practice and showcased his talent during Wisconsin’s spring game in April. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 121 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Lyles, meanwhile, completed 2 of 6 passes for 16 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Coan set Long Island career records for passing yards (9,787) and touchdown passes (128) while also rushing for 2,551 yards with 33 touchdowns. He was named New York Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior last season.
