Ohio State’s 55-24 upset loss to Iowa certainly dealt a blow to the team’s chances at earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 8 before the loss, but it was believed they could earn their way into one of the four spots had they won the remaining of their regular season contests.
With that dream possibly over, Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde sounded off on the Buckeyes’ motivation going forward on the Big Ten Network.
“Are they playing for their own NFL future at this point? Are they playing for Ohio State? Sometimes those things can mesh very well but sometimes they don’t. And so what is the mindset there, the makeup of the team? Is it it all for one, one for all, or is it ‘Hey, I need to improve my NFL stock, or ‘I need to avoid getting hurt.’ Or when things start going south ‘I need to make a business decision and look out more for me than anybody else.'”
Forde added he couldn’t say for sure what the mindset of the team was, but said that when teams recruit the best players in the nation, they are sold on the vision of the NFL.
To be sure, NFL teams probably wouldn’t want to see prospective draft picks quit on their teams with three regular season games left. But perhaps players dealing with nagging injuries will question their workload if things keep going downhill for Ohio State on Saturday afternoon against Michigan State.
