‘No one would win like he has,’ says former Alabama QB in defense of Nick Saban

In case you missed it, Alabama football coach Nick Saban is overrated — at least according to 9 percent of coaches interviewed anonymously by CBS Sports.

Saban tied for second with former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin (now at Florida Atlantic) and Lovie Smith (Illinois) in a survey of college football’s  most overrated and underrated coaches. Kiffin did win a national championship as Saban’s offensive coordinator in 2015 and Smith led the NFL’s Chicago Bears to Super Bowl XLI, where they lost 29-17 to Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts.

Saban, meanwhile, has won five national championships — four at Alabama and one at LSU. Still, one coach told CBS: “Nick’s got a lot of advantages. In [my conference], you could take five or six of us and get there a month before the season and win 12 games. There is a little f—ing machine underneath that stadium, and they grow them there.”

That created quite a stir among the Alabama football following, including one former player:

Barker, an Alabama quarterback in the early 1990s, helped the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1992 under Gene Stallings. The Crimson Tide beat No. 1 Miami 34-13 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 13-0 and capture the school’s 12th national title.

Alabama wouldn’t win another until 2009, Saban’s third season at the Capstone.

Fans came to the defense of their coach on SEC Country’s  Alabama Insiders Facebook page:
  • Richard:  Yeah Saban is average. Mike Shula won 12 titles while he was there and Franchione won 10. Anybody can win at ALABAMA, nothing to it. I bet all of these guys who say Saban is overrated had their @ss handed to them by Nick. Nine straight years of double digit wins, 4 national titles. He’s average, Tiger woods was overrated too. Along with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
  • Eric:  Wait a minute, there are have been people saying Bama players are overrated as NFL prospects and that it’s coaching that made them look so good. So basically it’s an overrated coach winning with overrated players. Why aren’t these other coaches winning national titles? And maybe they should shut their pie-holes- without Saban they would all still be making 500k per year.
  • Greg:  I am a huge Bama fan and Coach Saban fan but …. part of what they say is true. What and how Saban has built Bama leads people to believe that anyone could win with this program and they are partially right. We should be glad and proud of that . Whoever replaces him should have NO excuses for drop off whenever he decides to retire. We are set up for years of success because of his philosophy and “The Process ” !!!!!!
