Matt Luke said at his press conference on Monday that “first games are always unpredictable.” That’ll certainly be the case for the new Ole Miss interim coach this Saturday.
Luke leads the Rebels for the first time this weekend when they open the season at home against South Alabama.
Ahead of that matchup, Luke met with the media on Monday to address various topics surrounding his head-coaching debut, as well as the team’s roster.
Here’s an assortment of what Luke had to say, per Ole Miss Football’s official Twitter account:
- Luke said he believes “fast starts are very important,” and that the team needs to be sound and make adjustments.
- Of his first game, Luke said, “To be an efficient head coach and make good decisions, I have to be into the game and not be too emotional.”
- Luke said linebacker Donta Evans has emerged as a leader on defense and he is impressed with the role the redshirt freshman has taken.
- Luke also praised sophomore receiver A.J. Evans’ physical ability.
Per Parrish Alford of the Daily Journal, former cornerback Jaylon Jones is making a push at free safety, but junior C.J Moore is the current starter there.
Sophomore tight end Dawson Knox and junior defensive lineman Garrald McDowell are out for the opener, per Davis Potter of Oxford Newsmedia.
