Oklahoma tops Sports Illustrated’s Week 14 power rankings

As the College Football Playoffs draw ever closer, there might not be a team in the nation playing better than the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Sooners are topping plenty of power rankings this week. They’re No. 2 in the most recent AP Poll, but many analysts think they’re the best team in the country. Sports Illustrated is the latest outlet to rank Oklahoma No. 1 after Week 14.

Scooby Axson compared Oklahoma to Clemson, Auburn and Wisconsin, the other three teams in SI’s top four.

“The Sooners and their top-ranked offense could put up 45 points on any of these teams,” Axsom wrote, “so their defense could be the difference between another disappointing ending and a championship. The sting of the Iowa State loss in October has returned after the Cyclones closed the season by losing three of their last four.”

A marquee matchup rematch with TCU in the Big 12 title game on Saturday might solidify Oklahoma’s claim to the number one spot.
